HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Carson Daly said that he was given an ultimatum, which is why he decided to write his own material and continue on with “Last Call With Carson Daly.”
“An ultimatum was put in front of me [by NBC execs],” explained Daly. “It was, ‘Put a new show on December 3 or 75 people are fired. What’s your answer? ‘ “
Daly said that the criticism he has received since returning to the air has been a nightmare.
“People thought I had a choice… as if I wanted to come back, and come back without my writers,” he said.
The former MTV host refused to disclose who he received the news from. When asked who at NBC delivered the ultimatum, Daly simply said it was his “immediate bosses” but wouldn’t be more specific.
There has been an uproar against Daly by his peers, who have accused him of soliciting non-union writers. Daly is not a member of the Writers Guild of America.
Meanwhile, other late-night show hosts, including Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien, have announced that they are returning to the air on Jan. 2.
