Rocker Terry McDermott has had quite the ride on NBC’s The Voice. The singer from Scotland rocked the stage Monday night with his performances, including a killer duet with coach Blake Shelton on Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like A Lady” featuring a disguised and shirtless Adam Levine on guitar.
“Even in rehearsals we knew it was going to be a fun one,” McDermott told reporters of the performance after the show. “Every time we rehearsed it, we were falling around laughing just from the sheer stupidity of what we were doing on the stage. It was a great fun way to kind of poke fun at ourselves and have a good laugh. “
The singer also revealed that Monday’s live performance of the number was the first time Levine had performed with them sans shirt.
“You know what the funny thing is actually,” he said. “Apparently some people on the show had to tweet that it was Adam because some people were like ‘Hey, who’s this shirtless guitar guy? and it was like, ‘No, it’s Adam Levine.’ But it was a really nice way to kind of celebrate the end of the show and I know that I’ll remember [that performance] for a long time.”
The 35-year-old added that the duet was “great energy and a nice way to balance out the heavier side of [his other two performances] ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’ and ‘Broken Wings.’”
As his breakout song, McDermott chose to sing Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is,” telling reporters he’d like the song to be remembered as his finest moment on the talent show.
“I wouldn’t have imagined it connecting the way it did, but the way it was stripped down reminded me a lot of the music, the original music I did with my band in Scotland,” the father said. “It reminded me of that feeling of being on stage, pouring your heart out. So, I think that connection reminded me I need to get back to the music and I would hope that was strong enough that people remember it.”
In addition to his performances, McDermott was again surprised by Shelton with a family member from across the pond – his father.
“It [was a] wonderful surprise. I hadn’t seen my dad in four years,” he revealed. “He has to watch from afar being back in the UK, so the fact that he could come over and participate is great. The last time he was here was when he came to see me with my band play The Viper Room after we’d signed the record label so it’s nice to for him to kind of catch up on this chapter.”
McDermott then joked, “Although I did say to him, partly I have to have a record deal or be on a TV show for him to come see me in L.A., so I said we have to kind of stop that. You have to love me all the time.”
The two-hour Season 3 finale of The Voice airs Tuesday at 9 PM on NBC with a 60-minute recap at 8 PM.
