After months of keeping its viewers on edge with rounds of fierce singing competitions, FOX’s The X Factor is hours away from crowning its Season 2 winner — and the underdogs may have a chance at a comeback.
“I think [Fifth Harmony] had the hardest thing to overcome, because they weren’t a group,” Simon Cowell told reporters after Wednesday’s show of the group formed by the judges.
Cowell and fellow judges Britney Spears, L.A. Reid, and Demi Lovato have been waiting for this moment, along with countless fans and the Final 3 contestants Tate Stevens, Carly Rose Sonenclar and Fifth Harmony.
Which one are you rooting for after Wednesday night’s final performances?
The night consisted of three rounds of challenges: first the singer or group performs a repeat song of choice, second is a superstar duet, and third is the “5 Million Dollar Song” showing why the performer(s) should get the $5M contract with Sony.
First to appear on stage of the series hosted by Khloe Kardashian Odom and Mario Lopez was Sonenclar, with her rendition of “Feelin’ Good.” Following her performance, Reid said the New York-native topped herself, and Lovato was pretty impressed as well.
For Stevens’ Wednesday night performance, he chose to sing “Anthying Goes” – the same song he belted out during his original audition. For the most part, the Missouri man has stayed on top with his ranking each week during the live shows.
Tweeting live from The X Factor last night, Celebuzz T.V. Editor Jethro Nededog said, “Britney says that when he does country right down the middle, he’s right on. Demi tells him he’s elevated the song to stadium level. And Simon agreed. L.A. makes sure everyone knows that his singer is still loveable.”
Performing Ellie Goulding‘s “Anything Could Happen,” the underdog girl group Fifth Harmony appeared next.
After this round, the contestants each took on “surprise” songs, such as Carly’s “How Do I Live Without You” accompanied by country crooner LeAnn Rimes herself.
Tate left his comfort zone by choosing “Ponton” by Little Big Town, and Fifth Harmony went on stage with Lovato to perform her single “Give Your Heart a Break.”
For the closing songs of the evening, Carly sang “Hallelujuah” as she donned a pure white dress, Tate opted to sing Chris Young’s “Tomorrow,” and Fifth Harmony came together for The Beatles’ “Let It Be.”
The X Factor finale airs Thursday at 8 PM on FOX.
