“Not with excessive violence, or being hit, but rather being locked in a room and made to have sex against my will,” the 63-year-old Oscar-winner says of being raped in the October issue of British GQ.
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Helen Mirren is opening up about her dark past, which included being raped “a couple of times” and taking illegal drugs.
“Not with excessive violence, or being hit, but rather being locked in a room and made to have sex against my will,” the 63-year-old Oscar-winner says of being raped in the October issue of British GQ.
Mirren says that coming forward can be a challenge, and one that may not always be the right thing to do.
“It’s such a tricky area, isn’t it? Especially if there is no violence,” she tells the magazine. “I mean, look at Mike Tyson. I don’t think he was a rapist.”
Mirren also sheds light on the drug use that was part of her London youth, admitting that she experimented with both cocaine and marijuana.
“I loved coke,” Mirren confesses. “I never did a lot, just a bit at parties.”
“Dope always made me feel miserable and paranoid and unhappy,” she adds. “And I woke up one day and thought, ‘No more of that, thank you.’ “
