Tina FeyHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — While NBC’s hit comedy “30 Rock” was enjoying another big night, a couple of cable television hits, “John Adams” and “Mad Men,” made their presence more than felt at Sunday night’s 60th annual Emmy Awards.

For the second straight year, “30 Rock” won for best comedy series, snubbing fellow network sidekick “The Office” once again. “30 Rock’s” top two stars also walked away winners, with Tina Fey winning best actress in a comedy and Alec Baldwin taking top actor in a comedy honors.

“We’re very grateful to be up here again and so grateful to have survived into our third season,” said Fey, the show’s creator and producer, who also won for best writing on a comedy series.

The night’s biggest surprise may have come on the drama side, where “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston captured best actor in a drama series honors.

Less of a surprise was Glenn Close, who won best actress in a drama series for her role on the FX legal hit “Damages.”

But the night perhaps belonged to cable television. “John Adams” was the evening’s biggest overall winner with 13 awards, including best miniseries. HBO’s seven-part story of the nation’s second president set a new Emmy record for most wins by a miniseries, breaking the prior mark of 11 set by the network’s “Angels in America” in 2004.

AMC’s “Mad Men,” meanwhile, became the first show from a cable network other than HBO to win an Emmy for best drama.

History was also made when “Survivor” host Jeff Probst won the newly-created best reality show host category.

“Thank you for allowing reality in,” said Probst during his acceptance speech.

The upcoming presidential election was a recurring theme throughout the night at the ceremony, which was held at Los Angeles’s Nokia Theater, including when Jon Stewart picked up his award for best variety, music or comedy series.

“I really look forward to the next administration, whoever it is,” said “The Daily Show” host. “I have nothing to follow that. I just really look forward to the next administration.”
