HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Meg Ryan is opening up about her divorce from Dennis Quaid, a marriage that ended soon after the actress had an affair with her “Proof of Life” co-star Russell Crowe.
“Dennis was not faithful to me for a long time, and that was very painful,” the 46-year-old Ryan reveals in the latest issue of InStyle.
Ryan says her romance with the Australian actor started as her relationship with Quaid started to tumble, insisting that Crowe “didn’t break up the marriage.”
“He was definitely there at the end, but it wasn’t his fault,” she says of Crowe. “I was a mess. I hurt him too at the end. I couldn’t be in another long relationship, it wasn’t the time for that. So I got out.”
“My time as a scarlet woman was really interesting,” Ryan continues. “As painful as it was, it was also incredible liberating. Now I was utterly free. I didn’t have to care about what people thought.”
Ryan, who is currently starring on screen in “The Women,” says holding the title of “America’s Sweetheart” at the time of her messy divorce presented its own challenges.
“It’s an old-fashioned idea, so anachronistic,” she tells the magazine. “I understood it was a compliment about being lovable, and it felt nice … but it also felt, after a time, like ideas were being projected onto me that had nothing to do with me.”
“The girl next door to what?” she adds. “I never felt like a very conventional person.”
The “Sleepless in Seattle” star says she has enjoyed being out of the public spotlight in recent years, a time she has devoted to her son Jack, 16, and daughter Daisy, whom she adopted from China in 2006.
“I’ve been famous for a long time, and these last years, there’s been a great lull,” she says. “So it has been me throwing a backpack on, traveling a lot — it’s been fantastic.”
