15 Finalists Set for Visual Effects Oscar


Rise of the Planet of the Apes is among the 15 finalist for the visual effects Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films have been selected for consideration for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 84th Academy Awards.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

In early January, the members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee, who selected the 15 films, will narrow the list to 10.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Thursday, January 19. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The Academy Awards episode 84.1, “84th Annual Academy Awards” airs on ABC February 26th, 2012.

Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

Hugo was released November 23rd, 2011 and stars Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chloe Moretz, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released August 5th, 2011 and stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, David Oyelowo, Tyler Labine, Jamie Harris. The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt.
