Elisha CuthbertNEW YORK — Hockey star Sean Avery has apologized for his “sloppy seconds” comment earlier this week, a reference to his ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert.

“I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary,” said Avery, according to the Sporting News. “I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were. I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past.”

Avery was suspended indefinitely Tuesday by the NHL for “inappropriate” comments he made to reporters about Cuthbert. The suspension by Commissioner Gary Bettman came down hours after Avery spoke with reporters following a morning skate in Calgary, where his Dallas Stars were preparing to take on the Flames later that evening.

After approaching a group of reporters and asking if a camera was present, Avery said he just had “one thing” to say.

“I’m really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada,” he told the pool of writers. “I just wanted to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. But, enjoy the game tonight.”

Avery’s comments were alluding to Calgary’s Dion Phaneuf now dating the former “24” star. Cuthbert, 26, has also been romantically linked in the past to Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens.

For his part, Avery has also dated model and actress Rachel Hunter, who is the current girlfriend of Los Angeles Kings star Jarrett Stoll.
