BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born star of the iconic television series “Fantasy Island,” died at his Beverly Hills home Wednesday. He was 88.
Montalban’s son-in-law, Gilbert Smith, told People that the actor’s health had declined in recent months and that his passing was from “complications of advancing age.”
At the time of his death, Montalban was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
“He was in peace,” Smith told the magazine. “He will be missed.”

Montalban was born in Mexico City and was a star in his native country when MGM brought him to Hollywood in 1946.
He eventually achieved cult status when he was cast as the wish-fulfilling, white-suited Mr. Roarke on “Fantasy Island.” The ABC series ran from 1978-1984, consistently garnering top ratings for the network.
In addition to his television career, Montalban also had several notable film roles, including “Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn,” “The Naked Gun” and the “Spy Kids” series.
Montalban’s wife of 63 years, Gorgiana Young, passed away last year on Nov. 13, 2007. He is survived by four children and six grandchildren.
