LOS ANGELES — Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Rob Marshall’s Nine topped the list of contenders with 10 nominations apiece for the upcoming Critics’ Choice Awards, organizers announced Monday.
Both films were nominated in the best picture category, where they’ll compete against An Education, Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Invictus, Precious, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air.
James Cameron’s sci-fi film Avatar, which opens in theaters this weekend, racked up a total of nine nominations to follow just behind the leaders.
In the best actor category, the nominees are Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, George Clooney for Up in the Air, Colin Firth for A Single Man, Morgan Freeman for Invictus, Viggo Mortensen for The Road and Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker.
The best actress field features Emily Blunt for The Young Victoria, Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, Carey Mulligan for An Education, Saoirse Ronan for The Lovely Bones, Gabourey Sidibe for Precious and Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia.
Ronan, 15, also earned a best young actor/actress nod.
The 15th annual awards ceremony, to be hosted by Kristin Chenoweth, will take place on Jan. 15 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
