HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, co-founder of the pioneering hip-hop group Run-DMC, will serve as the host of a new positive-themed music reality show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new series, titled “The Kings of Rap,” will afford hip-hop musicians with a chance to earn a record deal. But the catch is they have to create music that isn’t offensive.
“There are so many talented kids out there who don’t get heard or don’t get signed because they’re not controversial enough, or they’re too positive. That amazes me,” McDaniels told the Reporter.
“The spirit of hip-hop was always about changing the world or yourself, not with a gun or with denigrating or offensive words, but by being effective with your mind,” he continud. “This is a time when everyone is talking about change, and we as a country have the opportunity to make a difference.”
The show, which is from IME Entertainment, will be shot in New York.
Run-DMC, which was also comprised of Joseph “Reverend Run” Simmons and the late Jason “Jam-Master Jay” Mizell, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April.
