Britney Shows Off Her Edgy Side at the 2002 MTV VMAs
Let’s be real. Britney has one of the best VMA streaks of all time. In 2000, this happened:

In 2002, Britney did not perform, but she still managed to make quite a splash when she showed up in a sexy leather dress and cap, evoking a dominatrix-meets-biker-chick aesthetic that hit all the right notes. At the time, Britney was still working to shed some of her “innocent” image, and this outfit helped do the trick. The recently single Britney — REMEMBER WHEN SHE USED TO DATE JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE?!?!?! — turned heads and made headlines, because that’s what she does best.
(Side note: 2003 was also a massive year for Britney at the VMAs, for that was the year she, um, what was it… OH YEAH, MADE OUT WITH MADONNA! Four consecutive years, four hugely iconic appearances? Who among your favs has done the same?)

I think Britney’s 2002 get-up is one of her finest looks ever: sexy, grown-up, and oh-so-Britney. We may remember her performances more than her walks down the red carpet, but this was definitely one of the highlights of the night.
Also of note: This is the outfit that Britney wore when presenting Michael Jackson with his “Artist of the Millenium award.” Or, you know, she was asked to wish Michael a happy birthday, and then he accepted a nonexistent award and it was only a little bit #awkward. One icon, dressed in an iconic outfit, presenting an award to another icon? Sounds pretty iconic.
