HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Fred Durst is stepping back in time and reliving the infamous was he or wasn’t he dating Britney Spears.
“It just became a fiasco of madness,” the 38-year-old singer recalls in an interview with MTV News. “[But] I always stay true to my heart and true to everything I did and my intentions, and I am in no way a liar.”
Durst was of course referring to the he said she said that transpired after he first went public with the supposed relationship. The pair was working together in 2003 when their collaboration supposedly turned romantic.
However, Spears would never admit to dating Durst, who was adamant in confirming they were an item. Durst wrote on the Limp Bizkit Web site that he never thought someone like Spears could make him “feel this way.” He also went on Howard Stern’s radio show and swore on his son’s life that he was telling the truth.
“I look back on it as very interesting [in terms of] how things have been sort of unraveling for her since,” he tells MTV. “[But] it is what it is. I can sleep at night knowing I made decisions that I wanted to make. [Still], I’m a supporter. I was then, I guess I am now.”
Durst tells MTV that he’s happy to see Spears back on top after a rough patch.
“I don’t think you can really write her off and I just think it’d be silly for people to think that they could,” says Durst, who recently reunited the classic Limp Bizkit lineup. “Everything kind of works in cycles and I think she’s an example of how those things work.”
As for that mystery relationship, Durst remains true to his word.
“I just guess at the time it was taboo for a guy like me to be associated with a gal like her,” he says with a chuckle.
