Poor Meredith Grey is losing her person.
Sandra Oh, who plays Mer’s cantankerous but brainy bestie, Cristina Yang, on Grey’s Anatomy, is set to depart the ABC medical drama after the upcoming 10th season.
“It’s been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang on GA and I am both sad and excited to see where this, her final season will take her,” Oh said in a statement. “It was an emotional and deeply creative decision for me and I feel fully supported by Shonda and the writers. It’s so rare in an actor’s life to be able to explore and grow a character so fully, so completely. I am profoundly grateful to everyone at GA for the opportunity.”
Oh, who won a Golden Globe for her Grey’s role, is just one of six original cast members whose two-year contracts are nearly up: Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. will also have to decide their fate on Shonda Rhimes‘ award-winning series come the end of its 10th season.
Over the past decade, the series has bid adieu to a slew of other show veterans, like Katherine Heigl, T.R. Knight, and Isaiah Washington. Now, it’s Oh’s turn to take her last bow.
Or, to just saunter out like a badass she is.
