LOS ANGELES — Actress Dixie Carter, best known for her role as wisecracking Southerner Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women, has died. She was 70.
Carter passed away Saturday morning, her publicist told the Associated Press. Her cause of death was not disclosed.
"This has been a terrible blow to our family," her husband, actor Hal Holbrook, said in a statement. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy."
The Tennessee native made her stage debut in a 1960 production of Carousel in Memphis, launching a showbiz career that would span several decades. The height of her fame would come on the CBS sitcom Designing Women, which aired from 1986 to 1993.
Carter would later earn an Emmy nod in 2007 for a guest role on ABC’s Desperate Housewives.
In addition to Holbrook, whom she married in 1984, Carter is survived by daughters Mary Dixie and Ginna.
