CHICAGO — Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams was pronounced dead Sunday morning, league sources confirmed to the NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi. He was 26.
Greenwood County Coroner Jim Coursey told WYFF-TV that Adams died after being rushed to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital in his hometown of Greenwood, S.C.
The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office and the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office are investigating his death, the local station said.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted the former Clemson star with the fourth overall pick in 2007.
Adams was traded to the Bears in October and played in 10 games this season.
