Todd Williamson for Candie’s
Bella Thorne is one of the most ubiquitous faces on the red carpet, and she can always be counted on to show up in something buzzworthy (there’s a reason she’s so often spotted in our hair inspiration gallery). We caught up with the actress (soon to be seen in the summer comedy Blended) at a Kohl’s in Westchester, Calif., where she checked out Candie’s latest offerings (she is the brand’s face, after all) and asked her about her style, her next big splurge and oh yeah — that hair.
Thorne, 16, who describes her style as “interesting, fun, and eccentric,” says that even at her young age, she has “a very strong sense of style. My stylist brings in maybe six or seven racks every time [we work together]. I pick out what I like and what I don’t like. I’m always like ‘No, no, no, no, yes! Okay, that’s the one.” And for her hair, which gets almost as much attention on the red carpet as her clothes, “There’s definitely a lot of time that goes into it,” Thorne says. “I have Tonya Brewer who does my make up and Castillo who does my hair, and we all kind of get together and chat about the look and the outfit and what we really want to achieve. Or what’s a cool new hairstyle to do that I’ve never tried. I do a lot of hairstyles!”

In her own time, however, she tries to maintain those glossy locks by leaving it completely alone. “I’m always on set getting it burned off, or cut, or dyed or something else for a new look,” she says, “So really in my off time (which is never!), I like to do nothing with my hair at all. It has a natural curl, kind of like a wavy, frizzy curl. I just leave it or throw it up in a ponytail.” Her at-home skincare routine is also pretty minimal. “My skin is really sensitive so if I’m not having to wear make up, I don’t want to wear make up,” she says. “I wear a Neutrogena SPF. They also have one that goes really well under makeup — it’s very soft and sheer. It gives you a natural glow which I think is really pretty if you’re just going out with your friends to the beach or whatever. You don’t need to pack on a ton of makeup.”
She may be making a big paycheck now, but Thorne (who cites Natalie Portman, Emma Watson and Kerry Washington as style influences) still loves to bargain-hunt for clothes — noting that she was definitely walking out of the Kohl’s with the dress she’s wearing and a pair of white denim shorts that make her “pale, not cute” legs look a little tanner. But she’s not immune from a splurge, either. Top of her list? “I really want to go buy this Chanel backpack. I’m not gonna lie. After I finish this film, I think I might do that.” We look forward to seeing it on a red carpet soon.
