Dakota Johnson’s somewhat of a hair chameleon, going from blonde to brunette faster than you can say “red room of pain.” But while she’s stuck to her Anastasia Steele-hued brown hair for some time now (the better to film sequels with, we assume), she did make one major change: She just lopped off a significant amount of length.

The star stepped out in N.Y.C. with much of her everyday uniform (skinny jeans, chic coat, booties) intact, but one major change: she was sporting a bob instead of her usual shoulder-length, tousled locks. Her bangs looked freshly trimmed, and rather than the layers we’re used to, the new cut was fairly blunt, with a little movement around her face.

Johnson promised to take things easy post-Fifty Shades of Grey promotional whirlwind, and so far she’s succeeded, mostly being snapped walking her dog and laying low in N.Y.C., and we suppose the new do is part of that.
