Freida Pinto doesn’t just look powerful in her gorgeous new photo shoot for Net-a-Porter’s The Edit. (That Jason Wu gown! Those gladiator boots! That bob!) The Slumdog Millionaire star also shares a powerful message about challenging stereotypes in her interview.

“It’s hard because the first thing people see when I go into an audition is that I am 100% Indian, but I don’t remember a time in my life when I did not see myself as a world citizen,” she says about Hollywood’s perception of her look and ethnicity. “When I watch films, I can always imagine myself as the female lead — even if it’s Minnie Mouse.”

But the 30-year-old actress refuses to let unfair beauty standards hold her — or anyone else for that matter — back. “I’m aware of the perception,” she says. “And I always say that if it’s because of that one line in Slumdog where Latika is described as ‘the most beautiful girl in the world,’ then I have to do everything I can to change the perception.”
Pinto goes on to talk about other missions close to her heart. She just became the ambassador for the Because I Am A Girl campaign, which supports young girls’ rights to a quality education. And she does it all amid a whirlwind of wardrobe changes in high-fashion designs by Sonia Rykiel, Vionnet, Vera Wang, Altuzarra, Balmain, and more.
Talk about a woman after our own hearts.
