She definitely has a low-key approach when it comes to her style, but Shailene Woodley (whose fashion philosophy is “no bra, no problem”) has been on a total red carpet hot streak while promoting her latest film Insurgent. So we went straight to her stylist Ilaria Urbinati for all the exclusive scoop.

“Shailene loves anything inspired from men’s tailoring, so this tux-inspired gown couldn’t be more perfect for her,” Urbinati told PEOPLE of the actress’s plunging Ralph Lauren Collection gown worn to the film’s N.Y.C. premiere Monday. (See it from all angles above.) “Something about the sleek black silhouette felt very New York.”
The 23-year-old star was only fit for the gown (which Urbinati describes as a sexy men’s tuxedo) last week, and she kept the look very simple, accessorizing with her favorite JLynn birthstone circle necklace.
While we know how the star feels about going barefoot on the red carpet, she did wear a pair of pumps for the event.
“It’s all about the brand — Casadei and Kurt Geiger make the most comfortable shoes, so she loves them,” Urbinati shared. “And I don’t usually go for sky high heels — my girls like to be comfortable and don’t have a complex about their height.” (Editor’s Note: Urbinati also dresses Nina Dobrev and Krysten Ritter!)

This is the second Ralph Lauren Collection gown Woodley has worn while promoting Insurgent, selecting an ivory, silk open-back design for the London premiere.
“She really loved that it was special and elegant, but that on the other hand, it had this T-shirt sleeve,” Urbinati said. “There was something that felt so effortless about that, and Shailene is very effortless. She doesn’t over think it, she doesn’t over fuss. And she wants to feel elegant and comfortable at the same time.”
As for the hair feathers (below), that was Woodley’s decision with her hairstylist. “I don’t think we thought about the hair length too much this time around like we did for Fault in Our Stars press and the first Divergent press since she had just cut it,” Urbinati explained. “This time around we did pick a lot of backless things, but that’s mostly because she has such a gorgeous back and shoulders and that pretty golden skin.”

Speaking of all that skin, Urbinati adds that the actress’s strong physique should be shown off.
“We weren’t really thinking sexier as much as strong and sleek – and that just happened to turn out very sexy, partly cause her body is in such amazing shape,” Urbinati shared. “She’s so lean and long. I just really didn’t want anything too fussy or too princess-y — just clean lines and a effortless, elegant feel. I didn’t want to see her in a ball gown. That’s been happening a lot lately on the red carpet, and thats just not who Shailene is.”
