Julianne Hough’s DWTS Photo Diary: Pink Hair Was Perfect for Disney Week!

Since last week’s installment of her exclusive behind-the-scenes photo diary for PEOPLE, DWTS judge Julianne Hough has made one major change: She’s dyed her hair pink, “the color of kindness!” And her timing couldn’t be any more perfect, since this week was Disney Week (oh, and last weekend was Coachella). Read on for all the scoop from Hough, plus her glam squad, stylist Anita Patrickson, hairstylist Riawna Capri and makeup artist Spencer Barnes.

As most stars who make a major mane change-up will tell you, a new hue (whether it’s red, blonde or yes, pink) can completely affect the way you dress. “Anita and Jules did an extra day of fittings to find the right dress to debute Jules’s “Unicorn Pink” hair color on national television,” Capri tells PEOPLE. “Usually it’s the dress that inspires the [hair], but for the first time, the hair color actually inspired this look! And this glistening cherry blossom pattern [by Jenny Packham] couldn’t have been better.”

She also jokes that Hough’s hair just confirms what her glam squad already knew. “It’s like Jules is our real life Barbie doll, and so much more fun now that Barbie is pink!” she says. “We all have the best time getting ready together, trying different hair styles or different lip colors.”

Because the hair already had a lot going on, Capri opted for simple, beachy waves (courtesy of Unite Beauty’s “Beach Day” sea salt spray and “Expanda” texture dust) and a lot of volume. “At the last minute, we decided to shake out the hair and flip it to the other side, which gave us so much volume and texture, and that’s when we all said ‘Yes!’ That was the winner,” she says.

There’s a reason both Capri and Barnes called Hough’s look “pretty in pink” — it couldn’t have been any girlier. “The Jenny Packham dress perfectly paired with the look with its delicate and magical beading details,” Barnes tells PEOPLE. “I wanted to keep her look fresh with a focus on cartoon-like features: a crisply defined brow and lash line, angular cheeks and complementary lip pout to pop Jules’s baby blue eyes.”

And though Hough once told us she didn’t like to be rushed, things were busier than usual around the trailer. “The day was busy today with extra interviews for the 10 year DWTS anniversary, so we had to work quickly as a team to get this look polished,” Barnes says. “Julianne’s a delight to get ready each week because she is adventurous and experimental with her looks.”
