Dancing With the Stars judge Julianne Hough picked a dress that was part ladylike, part revealing, fully “her” for the eighth week behind the judges’ desk. Read on for all the scoop!

This week, Hough chose a dress by Self-Portrait that balanced its girlie flounced silhouette with strips of sheer netting. “This is the second time I have worn Self-Portrait — I love finding new, cool designers!” Hough tells PEOPLE. “[Stylist] Anita [Patrickson] and I tried this dress on a while ago and loved the color palette and also how fashion forward it felt without trying too hard. I love the shape and the sexy sheer panels. The black fabric has a slick element to it that almost shines. Super cool and so fun to wear!”
Says Patrickson, “This look is all about high fashion edginess and bringing a little sass back. Last week was a really romantic silhouette, with a soft and vintage inspired neckline so we wanted to amp it up a little and turn up the glam factor.” But those panels did present the trickiest part of styling: “The biggest challenge was embracing the sheer panels whilst keeping the look chic and fashion-y.” In the end, keeping the look simple let the dress shine on its own. “Building the perfect look is about balancing proportions with shape,” she says. “If you want to show off your shape with a tight silhouette, keep keep yourself covered up and balance your look that way. If you want to show skin, a looser silhouette will keep your look classy and elegant …with just the right amount of sexy!”

Hairstylist Riawna Capri also wanted to keep things simple, and that meant starting with a fresh palette by way of a new cut! “It all started with a little mid season haircut that morning!” she says. “I took about 2-in. off all around, to show off her neckline a little more. By doing so, this creates a sexier, chicer vibe (versus the traditional shoulder length bob) which went perfectly with the high neckline in the dress.”
The best part of the experience for her (besides Hough’s delight at her new length?) “All the down time in between! Jules was teaching us some hip hop dance moves!” We’d like to see some of those on next week’s episode. (Want Hough’s piecey look for yourself? “Utilize your natural texture but scrunching in a sea salt spray, like ‘Beach Day’ by Unite. Then piece it out on the ends with a paste.”)
