Our PEOPLE StyleWatch style council is made up of some seriously awesome women — but they can’t take all the credit for their good looks and killer fashion sense. For our May issue, in honor of Mother’s Day, the stars paid tribute to the women who gave them good genes and great style advice: their moms and grandmas. Below, check out the most memorable tips these stars got from their mothers, and share your favorite straight-from-mom tip below!

Kristin Cavallari‘s mom Judy isn’t just a moisturizer fanatic — she swears by thick, rich cocoa butter for her face. “She uses it every night and she’s been doing it for years.” Cavallari marvels. “She’s 60 and looks amazing.” Soon to be a second-time mom herself, Cavallari still follows her mom’s beauty advice to the letter. “Everything she’s told me from growing up still resonates with me,” she says. “The most recent thing is her telling me to use the cocoa butter, but for my belly.”

Everyone knows Kourtney Kardashian‘s mom Kris Jenner, the remarkably well-preserved matriach of the famous Kardashian/Jenner clan. So her best advice to the eldest Kardashian sister won’t surprise you, and nor will Kourtney’s take on her mom’s, shall we say, general life oversight. “She is an advice machine. She’s always giving commands on what we need to do,” Kardashian shares. “She is bossy, but I love it and I love her advice. She was and still is so hands on and that has really been instilled in me as a mom.”

If you’re wondering where Ashley Madekwe’s great style and upbeat attitude comes from, you’re looking at her in the photo above. In addition to her “Be bold” mantra, she also instilled in Madekwe the belief that “Confidence is the best accessory a woman can have.” That great skin is genetic too: Madekwe says she’s been cleaning and moisturizing with Oil of Olay products for ages and still looks amazing.

Kelly Rowland takes style advice from all the women in her life. Says her mom, “Wear the clothes, don’t let the clothes wear you.” Her godmother’s input: “Never go to sleep with makeup on.” But the best advice came from her grandmother Ella Mae, who gave herself pep talks in the mirror. “I always heard my Gran Gran say she looked fabulous! She would put something on and just go,” Rowland shares, saying she follows the same philosophy now. “It doesn’t matter where I am, I just have to feel good.”

Nikki Reed’s mom Cheryl is also a moisturizer and sunscreen devotee (good habits get passed down!), but it’s Reed’s sweet memory of a mother/daughter shopping trip we loved the most. “I remember once we went to Forever 21 when I was younger and my mom picked out this blue corduroy blazer that I didn’t like, but she convinced me to buy,” she says. “I wore it to school and was the coolest person ever — I was the super cute girl that was ahead of her time! It’s her favorite story. She just has this classic style and it goes to show that … never goes out of fashion.”

Louise Roe’s mom Christine has instilled two key values in her stylish daughter: “Never judge a book by its cover” and “Less is more” — especially when it comes to accessories and sun. For a no-sun-needed glow, Roe adheres to her mom’s advice. “Use two types of blush: A bronzer along the cheekbone and rosy blush on the apples of the cheeks,” she says. “I love my Mum so much, she’s my best friend. Just writing this makes me miss her!”

Naya Rivera was very much an independent woman before meeting fiancé Big Sean, and that’s thanks to her strong, confident mom Yolanda. “You should know you should always be your own woman, have your own career,” Rivera says her mom told her. “No one you date or marry can define who you are: your own woman.” But for beauty advice, the tables are turned. “My mom has never used a moisturizer or fancy face wash – she has really great skin though!” says Rivera. “I’m actually the one that will give her beauty tips!”
