We’re constantly updating our “Last Night’s Look” gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Every Friday we’ll be highlighting one of the week’s most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hair stylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.
For this week’s LOTW, we’re breaking down Mad Men star January Jones‘s bold beauty moment (which paired perfectly with her new hue) for her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Although the 37-year-old is currently on a press tour for the last season on Mad Men, the actress stepped away from Betty Draper-inspired ensembles and made a style statement in a black fringe Preen mini for her time on Jimmy Fallon. Makeup artist Quinn Murphy, gave the star a red lip and a flick of blue eyeliner to play off the pops of color on her dress.
“The dress was black, but it had the movement of the beads and visual interest with the pops of color,” Murphy told PEOPLE. “So we wanted to do a red lip with the look, and then decided that a matching electric-blue flick of eyeliner would would be a bold and unexpected choice.”
To start, Murphy added a small amount of Clé de Peau Silk Foundation to a damp sponge to create a fresh, glowy complexion. He then highlighted her cheekbones with RMS Beauty Living Luminizer (a beauty editor favorite!) and a light, barely-there cream blush.
Moving on to the eyes, Murphy created an electric blue cat eye by thickening and extending the edges to “match the blue in the dress” with Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Eyeliner Pencil in Majorelle Blue. But Murphy can’t take too much credit for the vivid hue — it was Jones’s idea, after all!
“January [played] a big part in creating the look,” he explained. “She wanted to go with a bold blue eyeliner and was fearless about it.”
Keeping the rest of the eye simple in order to maintain a modern and not overdone look, Murphy moved on to perfect Jones’s fiery red pout. “On the lips, I opted for a brighter cerise hue,” he said. “It popped with [January’s] hair and bright blue eyes and also picked up the red in the dress.”
Murphy gave the actress a few swipes of Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick in 503, a reddish-pink shade, because “a deeper red would have pulled down the look.”
It was Murphy’s first time working with the actress, and he was impressed with her bold beauty spirit “She is great because she likes fashion and isn’t afraid to go for it,” he told PEOPLE. “She has a strong personal style and can pull off so many looks — and she is stunning!”

And for those of you who’d love to test-drive this playful look at home, Murphy recommends starting small. “I recommend using a pencil eyeliner — it’s more forgiving when you are creating the shape of the cat eye,” he told PEOPLE. “Keep the rest of the makeup light and simple — with a lip and an eye, you don’t need anything else. Start small and build it because you can always intensify the cat eye or amp up the lip.”
