Look of the Week: Lucy Hale at the ABC Family Upfront in N.Y.C.

We’re constantly updating our “Last Night’s Look” gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hair stylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

This week, we’re obsessing over the sultry smoky eye Lucy Hale wore for the ABC Family Upfront in N.Y.C. with fellow Pretty Little Liars co-stars Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson and Troian Bellisario. And since we’re crazy about her bold beauty look, we reached out to makeup artist Gita Bass to get the exclusive details on how to nail her smoky cat-eye, perfectly pink lip and more at home. We’ll totally be trying this out after work tonight!

The 25-year-old Mark brand ambassador and PEOPLE Guest Beauty Editor (find out her beauty tips and tricks in this week’s issue!) looked chic yet playful in a black strapless outfit by Elizabeth and James which is why Bass (and Hale!) went for simple but fun makeup to complement her frock.

“We were totally on the same page with this look,” she tells PEOPLE. “We both wanted something sultry and cool that wasn’t too fussy or perfect. We also both knew that the bronze would make her green eyes even greener and would really brighten up the black dress.”

To give the star a warm-weather golden glow for the night, Bass began by blending a few drops of Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow with Armani Luminous Silk Foundation into her bare skin with a damp Beauty Blender (one of the pro’s favorite techniques) and continued to enhance her faux tan with Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel bronzing cream, which Bass blended slightly up into the hollows of Hale’s cheeks and temples for a “natural summery contour” (don’t worry, no Kardashian kontouring needed here).

Hale’s sultry smoky eye is actually a mix of two different eye techniques blended together, Bass says. “It’s a smoky cat eye! Basically a smoky eye that wings out in a cat-eye shape to lift the eye.” The makeup pro began with Dior Fusion Mono cream shadow in Meteore (a shimmering copper shade), which she applied to the lids with a soft brush and then layered on a darker bronze shade (Charlotte Tilbury’s eyeshadow quad in Golden Goddess) to the crease, “winging it out a little and on the lower lash lines, then blended well for a smokey finish,” she explains of her technique. She continued by lining the top and bottom lashes with Laura Mercier Kohl Eye Pencil in Brown Copper and then smudged.

For added drama, Bass then used Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in Black to line the water line and upper lash line, and completed the eyes with a few flicks of YSL Volume Effect Mascara in Black.

Finally, Bass opted for a not-too-heavy hue for Hale’s pout to balance out the overall look. “Lucy naturally has a lot of color in her lips, and once the eye was done we decided her natural color worked really well,” she says. “Since the eye was super-strong, the lip seemed to balance out the whole look. Also, she is so gorgeous she can basically pull off any look. This lip was basically just lip balm (Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien) with a touch of soft pink but looked more dramatic because of her natural lip color.”

Overall, we love Hale’s finalized look — it’s perfect for day-to-night, which we’re all about these days. And, most of all, we love that Hale was involved in the process as well, which made these much easier for Bass, she says. “I was so happy to reconnect with her because she is absolutely gorgeous both inside and out!” says Bass. “She is one of those dream clients that makes you love your job.”
