Pretty Little Moguls! Shay Mitchell, 27, and Lucy Hale, 25, co-stars on the ABC Family drama Pretty Little Liars, have been keeping busy this summer — Mitchell with the relaunch of her lifestyle site and Hale with the unveiling of her new clothing line with Hollister. Mitchell stopped by the Hollister Beach House in Santa Monica, Calif., to support her pal’s concert-slash-collection release, and both stars answered some pressing style questions for us.

Hale, clad in her favorite piece from her new line, said she loved designing the collection, especially because she got to differentiate herself from her character Aria’s dramatic style. “The things that I wear on-stage and when I’m performing is Lucy. When you’re singing your songs that’s as vulnerable as you can get so I wanted the [collection’s] style to reflect my personality as well,” she says. “It was cool to get to call the shots! It was very fun to, like, play boss for a day.”

Though Hale and Mitchell both have very distinctive (and enviable) style — Hale’s more boho, while Mitchell does more of a California chic — both of them had their awkward moments growing up. They each vividly remember their worst-ever school outfit photos (and with back-to-school around the corner, we’d like to offer these up as cautionary tales to any teens out there). Hale’s was “these blue snow-leopard glittery bell bottoms … I thought I was really good at makeup so I had intense makeup — this was 8th grade — I had my butterfly clips, but it was like in the phase where you had the two strands that would, like, come down. The pants were cropped out, thank God!”
Mitchell had to go way back for hers — “It was in preschool and I wanted to do the thing where you had, like, your two bangs forward. I look back and I’m like, What was I thinking?” These days she doesn’t believe in fashion regrets. “I feel like they’re all learning moments,” she said. “You look back and you’re like, Whatever, I wanted to wear it that day, clearly that’s great. Good for you.”
Both girls are riding their success to some pretty sweet new purchases — Mitchell shelled out for a light pink Givenchy bag, while Hale treated herself to “my first house ever. That’s kind of a splurge!” — but both girls still hang on to pieces from way back before they hit the big time. Says Mitchell, “I think I have a pair of Miss Sixty Jeans from like, grade eight,” while Hale can’t give up a Roots sweatshirt she got when she was 17, as well as a sweatshirt of her moms “that’s she’s had that she was my age. So it’s old. Not insinuating that my mom is old. No backtracking there — sorry mom!” she laughs. We’re thinking if she sends her mom a few pieces from her Hollister line, all may be forgiven.
