Madonna Joins Dolce & Gabbana Boycott Conversation

Just when you thought the Dolce & Gabbana controversy was dying down, one very big name has added her voice to the discussion: longtime fan of the brand (and its former face) Madonna.

The star, who posed in a series of “sexy housewife”-themed ads for the brand in 2009 and 2010 (remember this?), joined celebrities including Elton John and Kelly Cutrone in speaking up against comments made by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in Panorama magazine.

(The comments, if you’re new to the story: “We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one … No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed” plus much more in that vein.)

Madonna didn’t go so far as to join the boycott, but she did Instagram a snapshot of herself from her former campaign holding a chubby-cheeked baby and shamed the designers for their anti-IVF, anti-gay family words. “All babies contain a soul however they come to this earth and their families. There is nothing synthetic about a soul!! So how can we dismiss IVF and surrogacy? Every soul comes to us to teach us a lesson. God has his hand in everything even technology! We are arrogant to think Man does anything on his own. As above so below! Think before you speak.,,,,,,,,,,,❤️#livingforlove” she wrote.

While this represents a step forward in Madonna’s tenuous friendship with John (the Can You Feel the Love Tonight singer kicked off a decades-long feud with Her Madgesty when he accused her of lip-synching, and they’ve only recently apologized) John himself fanned the flames of the controversy Tuesday when he stepped out in London carrying a shopping bag bearing the designers’ logo, though he hasn’t commented on what he was doing with the bag.
