The film, shot by A Most Wanted Man director Anton Corbijn, opens on a serene Portman on her wedding day receiving a bouquet of lilies of the valley. As she walks along the French Riviera to her waiting groom, she suddenly has a change of heart — and next thing you know, she’s climbing into a helicopter and flying into the sunset as Janice Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” swells. Watch the whole spot, below — but read on to learn more about the stunning dress she wears before making her great escape.

Much like the gorgeous gold gown worn by Charlize Theron in her J’Adore Dior fragrance ad, Portman’s exquisite wedding gown was handcrafted by Dior master tailors in their Paris atelier.

More than 600 hours of work were required to put together the gown, which consists of hundreds of tiny hand-cut fabric flowers which were then hand-dyed in shades of pink and white to create an ombré effect. Each bouquet was then sewn onto a tulle base with “irregular petit point stitches to give vibrancy to the embroidery, on both the flat and the raised parts,” according to Dior.

Director Corbijn says that his vision for Miss Dior — especially with the choice of song — was a feminist one. “It’s interesting to see that these women are kind of worshiped by men, projecting what men want to see, and yet they say they are feminists,” he says about the state of feminism in 2015. “For me it’s still coming from a man’s perspective. The great thing about Janis Joplin, for instance, is that the female perspective prevails.”

“It took a long time to find the music and this choice seemed to fit perfectly from all angles, including the song’s meaning,” Corbijn says. “The more I look at the Miss Dior film, the more I know we got the best track possible.” And the final touch? The shot of Portman’s (well, her body double’s) “Jack Kerouac” tattoo, which he loved. “The spirit of the Beat Generation!” he says.
