The custom gowns created for Oscar nominees are works of art in themselves, painstakingly handcrafted and worth many thousands of dollars. And Lupita Nyong’o’s custom Calvin Klein Collection gown, consisting of 6,000 Akoya pearls of five different sizes (and reportedly worth about $150,000 dollars), may have been the most literal demonstration of that. Now multiple outlets are reporting that the LAPD is investigating a report that the dress was taken from Nyong’o’s hotel room sometime Wednesday evening while she was out.

Detectives told the Los Angeles Times that they are reviewing surveillance footage and other evidence from the London West Hollywood hotel, and that “the value of the dress is part of the investigation and no arrests have been made.”
Are you shocked that someone took the gown?
