Oscars 2015: Lupita Nyong’o’s Pearl Dress Stolen from Her Hotel Room (UPDATES)

In what may be the most stylish jewel heist of all time, it’s been reported that Lupita Nyong’o’s pearl-adorned Oscars gown was lifted right out of her hotel room Wednesday.

The custom gowns created for Oscar nominees are works of art in themselves, painstakingly handcrafted and worth many thousands of dollars. And Lupita Nyong’o’s custom Calvin Klein Collection gown, consisting of 6,000 Akoya pearls of five different sizes (and worth about $150,000, according to the police), may have been the most literal demonstration of that. Now multiple outlets are reporting that the LAPD is investigating a report that the dress was taken from Nyong’o’s hotel room sometime Wednesday evening while she was out.

“A representative of Lupita Nyong’o reported the theft of a Calvin Klein dress that was worn by the actress on the night of the Oscars,” Deputy John Mitchell, Acting Watch Sergeant at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station tells PEOPLE. “The dress was taken from Ms. Nyong’o’s room at the London Hotel in West Hollywood at sometime during the day on Feb. 25. Ms. Nyong’o was not in the room at the time of the theft. The sheriff’s department here in West Hollywood and our detectives are investigating.”

A representative for Calvin Klein said they would not be commenting on the situation, and a London Hotel spokesperson said in a statement, “This is a terribly unfortunate situation, and we are working with law enforcement in their investigation.”

Are you shocked that someone took the gown?
