Sofia Vergara: On the Best Male Hair in Hollywood (and Whether She’s Contemplating a Big Cut of Her Own)

No one had more fun than Sofia Vergara at a recent shoot for Head & Shoulders — she was all smiles and giggles after a visit from new boyfriend Joe Manganiello (who may or may not have given her the beautiful flowers seen here). But while her “very happy” romantic life was all fun, the actress was all business when it came to her hair. She was in L.A. to kick off her “#partofourfamily” campaign (launching today) and she chatted with PEOPLE about all things beauty, a little Emmys sneak peek — and which guy has the best hair in Hollywood.

Our first question: Has she ever been tempted to update (perhaps drastically) her signature light-brown bombshell waves? “I’ve been working for 24 years, so I’ve never had the balls to do something crazy. I’ve always been conservative because I’ve been working,” she tells PEOPLE. “I’ve never had short hair in my life. I think now my hair is actually a little too long for my age. In Latin America, at a certain age, you cut your hair a little bit. But I’m fighting it. I’m milking my years for long hair!”

She comes from a family of good hair (you can see eight of her follicularly-blessed relatives costarring in her first ad, here), hence the contest name — those who tweet with #PartofOurFamily and @HeadShoulders will be eligible for a chance to meet Sofia. And in fact, she named her son Manolo, 22, as having the best male head of hair in Hollywood (after a loud laugh, of course — we’d say her squeeze gives him a run for his money).

We think it’s safe to say she’s going to have her standard luxe locks for the Emmys, but what about the rest of the look? “I still don’t have a dress. I’m waiting for my stylist to send me something fantastic,” she says. “Look, I know what looks good on me. I’ve been working for 24 years so I know exactly what works for me. I need to see the dress first, then I’ll decide what hair I’ll do … I try to keep everything real and not go too crazy over the board when I’m doing a red carpet because I want to feel like me.”

Not that it would be much different if she were just grabbing a pizza for a low-key night in. “It makes no difference because I am made up all day long, even when I don’t have a special event,” she says. “I get ready to go to eat a hamburger the same if I’m getting ready to go to a nice dinner or a date. I like being well put together, always.”

Thoughts about Sofia’s hair? What should she wear to the Emmys?
