This time of year, we live for layering. Celebrities tend to pile it on more gracefully than your average Jane, and these looks are no exception. How, exactly, do they make their outerwear stand out? Simple: They go the opposite of simple!

Newly minted Broadway star Emma Stone wore a heather periwinkle overcoat with a ladylike, almost A-line shape and paired with accessories that complement, but don’t match the shade exactly. Both the scarf and the hat have a similar marled texture, but at different scales. Even her phone goes with her coat!
Street style superhero Taylor Swift and actress Lena Dunham had a playdate (or, you know, they went to lunch) in Tribeca wearing totally different ensembles that were equally show-stopping. Taylor’s wearing a dark camel cape jacket, which she takes out of neutral territory with a bold berry scarf and sassy earmuffs (Anthropologie makes a cute pair!). Her sky-high Prada booties add to the girlie drama of this look. Lena’s quirky touches, like double-sided earrings (like these BaubleBar 360 Studs) and round ombré sunnies (try this Wildfox pair), along with her powder-pink coat and growing-out platinum do feel ultra mod.

And while out and about in Brooklyn, Michelle Williams went for a combo hipster and norm-core vibe. This army green parka just makes sense over olive and cream-colored layers, and looks super warm. Plus, we’re sure she’s not going for a full-on Top Gun vibe, because she opted for Wayfarers instead of aviators (insert sigh of relief here).
