Twitter Abuzz With Superstorm Sandy Photos: East Coast Survivors Share Images of Damage on Social Media

More than 8.2 million homes and business stretching from the Carolinas to Maine are without power in the wake of superstorm Sandy.

But for many of those who survived the monstrous weather event which hit landfall in New Jersey on Monday evening — killing at least 48 people in nine states, at last report — their phones provided a device to chronicle the once-in-a-lifetime storm.

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama declared the New York and New Jersey region a major disaster area, NBC News reported.

He promised that the federal government would do all it could to help local authorities cope with damage. The president was scheduled to visit damaged areas in New Jersey on Wednesday, the White House said.
