White House Correspondents’ Dinner: First Lady Michelle Obama Is Queen of the Nerd Prom in Marchesa

Lupita Nyong’o, Sofia Vergara and Olivia Munn brought their fashion A-game to the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but all eyes were on First Lady Michelle Obama who proved once again that she can do red carpet glamour as well as any Hollywood star.

The FLOTUS wore a grey tulle dropped shoulder gown with silver floral embroidery from Marchesa to the annual event. The dress was a customized version of look 20 from the label’s Fall 2013 collection, which was inspired by eighteenth-century painter Francisco de Goya’s Portrait of Maria Teresa de Vallabriga on Horseback. Among the changes made to the original piece? The sheer long sleeves that were part of the original design when it debuted at the Marchesa show in 2013 had been removed, giving the crowd an uninstructed view of Obama’s famously toned arms.

Fashion blogs quickly declared the First Lady one of the night’s best dressed, though perhaps Nerd Prom Queen would have been a more fitting title.

Among the evening’s other style standouts was Jessica Simpson, who showed off her slimmed-down frame in a strapless floral-print Carolina Herrera princess gown. Rose McGowan attracted plenty of attention in a peek-a-boo exposed bustier gown by Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko.
