Whitney Port‘s recent decision to cut some mega inches off her hair had at least one editor asking the question: “Why now?” So when we caught up with the bride-to-be, we had to get to the bottom of her recent hair change, and (of course) find out how wedding planning is going.

“I had my long hair forever, and I was just getting sick of it, and I was feeling like I was sort of a slave to it,” she tells PEOPLE. “I wanted something fresh and more mature.”
And there were no tears shed in the salon when she got the cut. In fact, Port wanted to go even shorter! “I think my clothes are even changing more now,” she shares. “I feel like I can pull off edgier, more modern looks. The cut feels more fashion-y. It’s more elevated and less
‘beachy Cali girl,’ which most people may associate me with.”
Most brides would be wary about cutting their tresses before the big day, but it’s the opposite for Port. “I have seen myself with these long waves a million times. Most people love the long waves for the wedding, and for me it was going to feel stale — just me looking like me again. I just thought something more fresh would make my look special on my wedding day, a little more different and interesting.”
Right now, she’s having the whole down vs. up debate all brides face. “I feel like it will probably be down and relaxed, but I thought about a low messy bun type thing too. I want it to just be as natural looking and easy as possible.”
From the venue to the music, the designer has a lot of things checked off her wedding “To Do” list. And she says that her fiancé Tim Rosenman has been very instrumental in planning.
“I don’t make any final decisions without him seeing it,” she explains. “He’s been the most excited about the music. We’ve already compiled a huge list of the songs we want for during the ceremony, cocktail hour and then the party. He’s really passionate about what kind of music plays there. My mom really cares about the food and the hospitality aspect of it.”
As for our personal favorite part — the dress! — Port shares that she’s collaborating with a designer (no big reveal just yet) to make her vision come true. “I’m waiting for the first sketches, but I sent them a bunch of different inspiration images, so I’m excited to see what they come back with,” she says, adding that Lauren Bush Lauren’s turtleneck lace design was one of her favorite celebrity wedding dresses ever. “But for some reason, it’s not a huge stressor for me. I guess I know I’m in good hands, but I don’t have a really clear image on what I want to be, which is probably something people wouldn’t expect given my design background. I have so many different ways I could go.”

Port is getting ready to debut her own line of wedding invitations with Wedding Paper Divas, and just launched her online blog with the bridal brand.
“You’ll definitely be able to feel the similarity between my own invitations, and my Wedding Paper Divas line,” she says. “I think mine may be a little more detailed and personalized to Tim and I, as opposed to my design aesthetic coming through in the collection. [Wedding Paper Divas] has really pushed my creative boundaries and my limits, and to create something visual is a really fun thing to do together.”
