Why You Should Care About the Viral Hashtag #MyDressMyChoice

Protesters gathered at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday in support of a Kenyan woman who was assaulted at a bus stop earlier this month. The meaning behind the attack? A few men had disagreed with the length of the woman’s skirt and thought she was dressed immodestly, so they stripped and beat her before leaving her nude in the street. The whole horrific incident was caught on camera, and the video, which has since been removed from the Internet, sparked the viral hashtag #mydressmychoice, where Twitter users have been weighing in with their opinions.

It’s true we all have our own taste when it comes to clothes, but what a person chooses to wear – short skirts, long skirts, layers of clothes, barely any clothes – is a personal choice, and a choice that should never be met with violence or assault. As one protester put it perfectly, “Who decides what is indecent or not?”
