Zooey Deschanel: My Clothing Brands Don’t Define Me (but My Bangs Kinda Do)

Zooey Deschanel may project a sweet-as-pie image in her A-line dresses and retro-glam bangs, but in her interview in the August issue of InStyle, she proves that she’s a little spicy, too. Case in point? She’s not afraid to call out other stars for fashion snobbery.

“I remember I was wearing a cute jacket, and I saw this well-known actress — who will remain nameless — with her stylist,” she shares. “They said, ‘Oh my God, that’s so cute, where did you get it?’ I told them, and it was not a fancy brand, and then they were like, ‘Oh…’. I just thought, Do you not like it anymore because of the brand? That’s so dumb. And you have just made yourself into a cartoon villain.”

She, on the other hand, looks like a cartoon princess in the fashion line she designed, To Tommy From Zooey. It was born out of her longtime love of sewing clothes (she tailored her own prom dress) and designed to be something she’d actually wear. “There is an audience for more modest clothes,” she says.” I hate that fashion could be something that excludes people.”

Deschanel is also willing to discuss her signature fringe (“I do see the advantage of having something people can grab onto: ‘Hey, I know who that is! She has bangs!’”) but totally (and rightly) unwilling to go there on the subject of whether she’ll have kids. “When I was married, that was the first thing people wanted to know,” she says. “Like every woman is dying to give birth! I don’t think so. Nobody asks guys that … That’s not something that defines me at all.”
