Bono is using a little humor to deal with the first few days of 2015.
In his recap of 2014, appropriately titled “Little Book of a Big Year: Bono’s A to Z of 2014,” the U2 front man looks back on his scary bike accident in New York City, Irish pride and his career’s future.
In the letter, published to the band’s website on Thursday, Bono says he can’t blame the November spill in Central Park “on anyone but myself, mainly because I blanked out on impact and have no memory of how I ended up in New York Presbyterian with my humerus bone sticking through my leather jacket. Very punk rock as injuries go.”
According to the 54-year-old rocker, he now has a titanium elbow and his injuries are “significant enough that I will have to concentrate hard to be ready for the U2 tour in fitness terms.” (The band is slated to kick off a 60-show world tour in May this year).
Following the accident, U2 cancelled multiple appearances and even performed without Bono at a World AIDS Day concert in Times Square, an event obviously close to his heart.
Elsewhere in the musician’s New Year’s Day letter, he writes that despite breaking his hand, shoulder, elbow and face in the November accident, “the real injury this year was to my Irish pride as it was discovered that under my tracksuit I was wearing yellow and black Lycra cycling shorts. Yes, LYCRA. This is not very rock ‘n’ roll.”
On a more serious note, Bono admits “recovery has been more difficult than I thought.”
“As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this.”
