Rumors have been going wild with speculation that Cameron Diaz is engaged to boyfriend Benji Madden, and while she doesn’t explicitly answer whether or not they’re true, she does provide insight on why they have such a great relationship.
In Cosmopolitan‘s January 2015 issue, the Annie actress opens up about how she and Madden have make it work and what she thinks are the key components to a successful, happy relationship.
“You have to find someone in the same place as you are. Timing is everything,” she explains. “If you get into a relationship where you want something the guy doesn’t want, it’s never gonna work. You’re never going to get him to be in that place. No matter how old you are, finding the guy who’s in the same place as you are and wants to show up is the only way a relationship works, period.”
Diaz has had her fair share of experience dating some of Hollywood’s more eligible bachelors over the years (Justin Timberlake, Alex Rodriguez and Jared Leto to name a few). So what has she learned from her exes in moving forward with her new rocker boyfriend?
“Here’s the thing: You make the same mistake over and over again until you learn your lesson,” the 42-year-oldactress says. “We girls sometimes do the thing where we pick the same person over and over again—they look and seem different, but deep down, they’re the same. And that’s on us.”
But Diaz isn’t just seeking the unknown in her love life. It’s also expanded into her career, too, taking on her very first musical as Miss Hannigan in Annie.
“It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done in a movie. I cried a lot,” she reveals about singing. “[Miss Hannigan is] bitter because her chance at fame was stolen, and all she can taste is that taste, which is very much in line with this day and age. People determine your value by how many friends you have on Facebook or if you’re Instagram famous.”
