It looks like Divergent won’t be going down the Mortal Instruments path. Like The Hunger Games and Twilightt, the young adult franchise will have its second novel adapted for the silver screen.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed news of a Divergent sequel, titled Insurgent, on Friday after the Shailene Woodley flick opened to the tune of $4.9 million in midnight screenings.
“We’re off to a great start with strong numbers from all regions of the country, urban, suburban and rural alike,” said Feltheimer. “We’re confident that Divergent is on its way to becoming another important franchise for us, and we have just greenlit the second film, Insurgent.”
The sequel will begin production in May with a projected March 20, 2015 release date. The third book in the Veronica Roth dystopian series, Allegiant, is slated for March 2016.
