Meet Chuckesmee. This puppet/robot hybrid almost played the role of Bella and Edward’s daughter, Renesmee, in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. Except, it was canned for being incredibly creepy.
Twilight fans will be familiar with Chuckesmee, nicknamed that for its resemblance to Chucky from the Child’s Play movies, but this is the first time anyone has actually seen just how creepy it is. The featurette on Chuckesmee is one of the special features on the complete Twilight saga DVD box set.
“The second you’re holding it up you realize this is never going to work,” producer Wyck Godfrey says of Chuckesmee. ”No fake thing is ever going to do the trick. If you’re Bella, you’re looking at it going, ‘I don’t want that thing. Put it back!’”
In the end, the robot baby was retired and a real child with a CGI face was used. While that itself was pretty creepy, we had no idea at the time the true terror from which the film’s producers had spared us.
