Miley Cyrus Reveals Reason Behind Liam Hemsworth Split: I Couldn’t “Be Myself” Around Him

Leave it to Barbara Walters to uncover the truth behind Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth‘s broken engagement.

As a part of the journalist’s ABC special, Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013, Cyrus finally opens up to the TV icon about her breakup with her The Last Song co-star, revealing exactly why the young couple called it quits before heading down the aisle.

“I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year,” the 21-year-old singer tells Walters in a pre-taped interview, explaining that she believes they were moving too fast when Hemsworth popped the question in 2012. “I don’t ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can’t be yourself.”

“I don’t think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged.”

Admitting that she did love Hemsworth, 23, at one point during their four-year relationship, Cyrus continues that she now accepts being on her own.

“It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years,” she says of her one-and-a-half year engagement to the Hunger Games actor. “But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy. I wait for those moments of silence, when I’m just at my house, by myself.”

“I don’t think there was any, any lies,” she adds of their relationship.

As for future marriage plans, Cyrus says she’s not staying a bachelorette forever. When Walter asks Cyrus whether she wants to be married, the “We Can’t Stop” crooner says, “I think I’ll want that in the times that it needs to be.”

Cyrus’ full interview with Walters will air on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
