No other director of our time would come up with, let alone convince a major movie studio to invest in, a movie that is essentially an amalgamation of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Godzilla. If you haven’t heard of Pacific Rim before this moment in time, now you have.
Set in the near future, monsters the size of skyscrapers arise from the depths of the ocean and wreak havoc on the people of Earth. And because it’s the only course of action that seems logical, the humans build giant robots to defend themselves.
If that doesn’t scream summer blockbuster, I don’t know what else does. In a world filled with endless remakes, reboots, and unnecessary sequels, the idea of something new is exciting.
