When ice skating superstar Johnny Weir tied the knot with Georgetown law grad Victor Voronov in a civil ceremony on Dec. 30, 2011, it was the dream union, complete with handwritten vows, a new year to start their life together and tons of excitement.
“Marrying Victor has been the greatest moment in my life and I will work very hard to make him proud and happy,” he said in a statement just after their “I dos.” “I am so happy to have found my match.”
Weir also vowed to introduce his new husband to his flashy and flamboyant “world of glitter and Faberge eggs,” but as that has come crashing down, Voronov has been blindsided.
“It’s very emotional for Victor, he feels duped, he feels betrayed,” his crisis manager Wendy Feldman told Celebuzz.
Weir has claimed Victor knew about the divorce, but Feldman contends, “he categorically did not know.”
“There are many letters, emails and photos. There are emails saying ‘I love you,’” she added.
Things took a turn for the worse when the two were involved in a domestic violence incident in January that led to Weir’s arrest for biting Voronov, but they asked a judge to dismiss all charges March 5, as first reported by Radar Online.
“I was defending myself on that night,” the 29-year-old Olympic gold medalist told Access Hollywood last Thursday in a tell-all interview about the couple’s alleged physical altercations. “You would never see a mark on my body, but the damage that was done to me mentally was crippling,” said Weir, who moved out of their house last week with the couple’s dog and his prized Louboutin and Birkin collections.

After reportedly promising to stay committed to the marriage and work on their relationship after charges were dropped, it was only then that Weir reportedly filed for divorce Feb. 12, even signing a complaint for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences” weeks before on Jan. 28. But Voronov was unaware Weir had taken it that far as they continued to reconcile.
“I was the one who told Victor,” Feldman continued, after confirming the filing with the New Jersey county clerk. “Yes, they had a major fight, but he did not know papers were filed.”
Weir went on to downplay their fights were not “often,” describing it more as “good humored wrestling.”
“But a few times, of course, it did get physical,” Weir admitted to Billy Bush, claiming that during the time in question Voronov was “very drunk” and it had to do with “financial messiness.”
“We had a fight, and then I went to sleep because I had to work the next day, and he came in — not very himself — and asked me to lay with him in the biblical sense, and when I refused, the altercation between us started,” he alleged.
Weir’s very detailed confession of their private life and his version of events was “shocking,” according to Feldman and her client.
“Victor said people’s true colors sometimes do come out and they’re not what you hoped they would be,” said Feldman, who also doesn’t deny their marriage had its ups and down.
“Have they had a volatile relationship? Absolutely.
“He didn’t know [about the divorce filing]. That doesn’t mean he didn’t know they’ve had problems like any normal couple,” she said.
“It’s a tough one because he feels very betrayed and it’s in public.”
The couple is expected back in court on Wednesday.
