One big surprise for moviegoers watching The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this weekend is a post-credits scene revolving around X-Men’s Mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence, promoting the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. You can now watch that scene right here.
Thanks to Marvel’s habit of setting up future films in a post-credits sequence, audiences have come to expect a little preview following the credits of what’s coming next. However, rather than teasing their Sinister Six movie, Sony, which released The Amazing Spider-Man 2, allowed 20th Century Fox to advertise their upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.
But fans of both films shouldn’t get too excited, there’s no crossover film planned.
In fact, the X-Men scene has nothing to do with the plot of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and is set in the 1970′s, whereas Spider-Man exists in the present day. According to Variety, the reason Sony is promoting a 20th Century Fox movie has to do with contract negotiations. To boil it down, Spider-Man director Marc Webb is under contract to direct a second film for Fox Searchlight, after the success of (500) Days of Summer. However, Webb is on loan to Sony to direct the Spider-Man films, which he worked on back-to-back. In order to ensure they’d be able to get Webb for all the Spider-Man movies they want, Sony agreed to let Fox promote its X-Men movie at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
So, no, as much as Marvel comics fans may like, it doesn’t look like Spidey and the X-Men will be doing battle together any time soon. So let’s just enjoy this for what it is, is sneak peek at X-Men: Days of Future Past.
