NEW ORLEANS — Kevin Costner has landed a new role off the big screen that involves cleaning up the major oil spill spreading across the Gulf of Mexico.
Disturbed by the disastrous 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, the actor and environmental activist funded a science group, Ocean Therapy Solutions, headed by his brother Dan, to develop a technology that can separate oil from water.
BP has been struggling to stop oil from pouring into the gulf since an underwater explosion sank the Deepwater Horizon drill ship last month, killing 11 rig workers and creating a massive environmental catastrophe.
Costner and his business partners recently met with the local media to discuss their oil extractor device, which BP is planning to use.
"It's prepared to go out and solve problems, not talk about them," Costner said of the technology.
"I'm just very happy that the light of day has come to this, and I'm very sad about why it is, but this is why it was developed, and like anything that we all face as a group, we face it together," he added.
