‘Alice in Wonderland’ Shatters Box Office Records

Alice in WonderlandHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Tim Burton’s fantasy adventure Alice in Wonderland earned a whopping $116.3 million — a record opening for a 3-D film — to easily capture the weekend box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The Walt Disney Studios film, starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, registered an even bigger opening than James Cameron’s 3-D epic Avatar, which has gone to become the highest grossing film in history.

Coming in a distant second was Brooklyn’s Finest. The Richard Gere and Don Cheadle film earned $13.5 million in its opening weekend.

The Martin Scorsese thriller Shutter Island slipped to third place at $13.3 million after winning the box office in its first two weekends.

Cop Out ($9.1 million) and Avatar ($7.7 million) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the top five.
