CAIRO — CNN anchor Anderson Cooper escaped serious injury Wednesday after being attacked by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.
Cooper, 43, said he and his production crew were punched in their heads in Tahrir Square by a mob, who thought they were taking photos.
"We immediately turned around," Cooper explained. "The crowd kept growing, throwing more punches and kicks. It was pandemonium. There was no control to it. A young man would come up, look at you and punch you right in the face. The instinct is to punch back or push back, but in a situation like that, you really can’t because that just inflames the crowd all the more."
CNN said no one was seriously hurt during the incident.
There have been reports of other journalists being attacked in the country, where protesters have engaged in a weeklong political upheaval.
