HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Raffaello Follieri, the longtime ex-boyfriend of Anne Hathaway, has been arrested, according to The Associated Press.
The Italian businessman was arrested on charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering. He is due in Manhattan federal court Tuesday.
Follieri, 29, is accused of falsely telling an investor that he had been appointed as the chief financial officer of the Vatican so he could obtain properties of the Catholic church in the U.S. at a discount to fair market value, AP says.
The 25-year-old actress, who currently stars in the feature film "Get Smart," recently ended the couple's four-year romance.
Follieri has been the subject of several legal scandals in recent time. Earlier this month, it was disclosed that a children's charity run by Follieri was under investigation by New York authorities. The news followed his arrest earlier this year for allegedly passing a bad check in the amount of $215,000. In addition, Follieri was sued by his former business partner a year ago.
"It's heartbreaking for her to dump him, and she's devastated that it's come to this, but she really didn't have a choice," a source told Britain's Daily Mail recently. "His scandals were hurting her reputation."
