HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” licked the competition once again, holding onto the No. 1 spot at the box office for the second straight weekend.

The Disney film brought in $17.5 million to outlast the thriller “Quarantine,” which debuted at $14.2 million.

Finishing in third place was the duo of Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, whose Warner Bros. film, “Body of Lies,” registered an opening weekend of $13.1 million. Dan Fellman, who heads up distribution for Warner Bros., told The Associated Press that the terrorism thriller ran into tough luck after last week’s financial market meltdown.

“I think we ran into difficult timing,” said Fellman. “The nation suffered such an economic loss this week that the mood of our audience was such that they were probably looking for a little more escapism than to see a movie on terrorism.”

While lighter in mood, “The Express,” Universal’s story of football star Ernie Davis, also had a slow box-office start, finishing sixth on the weekend.
